Team effort saves kayaker from Waitematā Harbour

Location:

Waitematā

Police have saved a man from near-death after he fell out of a kayak and spent more than two hours in the waters of Waitematā Harbour.

At 3.40am today, a call came in saying two men had fallen from their kayaks while on the way to a moored boat. One managed to reach the boat and eventually raise the alarm, but the other got caught in the currents of the outgoing tide.

Concerningly, the men had fallen into the water two hours earlier, but there was very little additional information, says Senior Sergeant Garry Larsen QSM of the Marine Rescue Centre.

One before the courts following burglary, Dannevirke

Location:

A Dannevirke business can breathe a sigh of relief after Police recovered a $30,000 Rough Terrain Vehicle that was stolen earlier in the week.

The business was targeted by three people shortly after midnight on 20 April. The offenders entered the yard and spent about 90 minutes wandering around before they cut a fence and towed the vehicle out using a quad bike.

Constable Micaela Hodgson says CCTV assisted enquiries, but the case got a boost when a man tried to purchase an ignition key from a store the very next day.

Emergency services join forces in the Bay of Islands

Location:

Northland

A vessel carrying 50 people in Bay of Islands waters has struck a reef and five people are dead … this is the scenario put to our emergency services during a recent rescue exercise.

Based on a realistic disaster involving a cruise ship tender carrying 50 passengers striking the Brampton Reef, this exercise was designed to test our response capabilities in a complex maritime emergency.

Police, along with partner agencies, gathered for the large-scale search and rescue exercise in Paihia from 17-19 April.
