Police in Gisborne worked hard to keep roads and communities safe over the weekend, targeting impaired drivers across Tairāwhiti.

The Eastern District Impairment Team deployed to the region and worked alongside local Road Policing staff and members of the Serious Crash Unit.

Senior Sergeant Trent Higgs says the teams focused on high-volume breath testing and drug impairment checks, setting up multiple checkpoints between Thursday and Sunday.

Two people have been arrested and charged following a firearms incident in Papakura last week.

Police were called to an address on Hill Crescent at about 6.30pm on 23 July following reports a firearm had been discharged.

Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers, Counties Manukau CIB, says two men were taken into custody in Manukau during the weekend.

“A 26-year-old man has been charged with discharging a firearm with reckless disregard, assaults Police, and breach of EM bail.
