Dogged determination locates fleeing youths

A Police Tactical Dog Team was on the scent of fleeing youths last week, tracking them through Northland bush for over a kilometre.

Just after midnight on 2 May, Police received reports of a group attempting to steal vehicles in Kerikeri and Whangārei.

Northland District Prevention Manager, Inspector Dean Robinson, says the youths were allegedly travelling across the region in a stolen Toyota Aqua while targeting other vehicles.    

“A short time after receiving these reports, a vehicle of interest was observed in Whangārei, and officers signalled for it to stop.

Drugs, guns and plywood – man arrested for midnight movements

A man is in court this morning following a Police stop which found him in possession of a pistol, drugs and a large amount of cash.

Just after 11.30pm last night, Police were patrolling on Hobson Street in Feilding and observed a man loading plywood onto a trailer parked on the roadside.

While talking to the man, Police noticed and located a pistol in the driver’s footwell of the vehicle, which resulted in the officers conducting a search.

Update: Man charged in relation to Ruatiti double homicide

Police can confirm a 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to the deaths of Brendon and Trina Cole on Murumuru Road in December 2025.

Detective Inspector Gerard Bouterey says this arrest represents a significant milestone for the investigation team and Police are pleased to have this result for the Brendon and Trina’s families.

“While this is great result, considerable work remains and investigators will continue to pursue all outstanding lines of enquiry.

Investigation continues into Far North death


Location:

Northland

A Police investigation will continue into the events leading to a person’s death in the Far North overnight.

Cordons remain in place on Ngapipito Road heading into tonight, with a large scene examination taking place today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Christan Fouhy, of Northland CIB, says investigation staff will remain present in the area.

“Our investigation is still in the very early stages in piecing together the events that have led to these two males coming off these dirt bikes,” he says.

Arrest follows spate of vehicle thefts and burglaries

Police have arrested an 18‑year‑old man following a series of thefts from vehicles, burglaries and fraudulent use of bank cards across Canterbury.

The man is facing over 20 dishonesty charges including burglary, theft ex car, unlawful interference with a motor vehicle, possession of goods used to commit dishonesty offences, and using bank cards to obtain goods dishonestly.

Four youths arrested after Dunedin petrol thefts in stolen car

Police have arrested four youths after they stole a vehicle and later stole petrol from local service stations.

Overnight on Monday 4 of May Police received reports that a Nissan vehicle had been unlawfully taken from a residential address in Caversham.

Throughout the day yesterday the stolen vehicle was reported to have conducted petrol drive-offs from at least two Dunedin petrol stations.

Gang patch leads Police to loaded firearm and ammo, Palmerston North

A cut-down firearm and ammunition have been seized by Police acting on a breach of the Gang Insignia Act in Palmerston North.

About 8.50am on Tuesday, Police spotted a man allegedly wearing a Black Power patch on Highbury Avenue.

He was stopped in his car on Birmingham Street and during a routine search, Police located rounds of ammunition in a resealable bag.

Southern Police pleased with duck hunting behaviours so far

Over the opening weekend of the three-month-long duck hunting season in Southland, Police and Southland Fish and Game conducted a joint compliance operation ensuring hunters were abiding by the law, and rules and regulations.

In the first weekend of May, Operation Daffy saw three teams, consisting of one Southland Fish and Game Ranger and one Police officer, visit a large number of ponds and maimai across the Western Southland, Eastern Southland, and Invercargill areas.

Arrests after Rānui incidents

Police have made arrests after two separate incidents resulted in people being wounded in Rānui this afternoon.

Just before midday Police were called to a residential housing area on Swanson Road following reports of a disorder involving a group of people.

Detective Inspector Callum McNeill says on arrival officers located one person with non-life-threatening stab wounds.

“A 23-year-old woman was taken into custody over the incident, and the person with injuries was transported to a medical centre on Swanson Road,” Detective Inspector McNeill says.

Gangs, drugs and firearms operation lands nine in court

Gangs, drugs and firearms across Hawke’s Bay and Wairoa were targeted last week, resulting in nine people appearing in court, with further arrests likely.

Operation Tar, an investigation led by the Gang Disruption Unit, saw prevention and enforcement teams working together to target gangs, drugs and firearms while also supporting affected communities.

Detective Inspector James Keene, Eastern District Police, says the operation focused on both enforcement and prevention.
