A driver allegedly nearly three times the legal limit will now face court after officers spotted him slumped over the wheel in Papatoetoe.

At about 1am on Tuesday, a Police unit noticed a Mini Cooper parked on Shirley Road with the driver leaning over the steering wheel.

Acting Senior Sergeant Joanna Hunkin, Acting Counties Manukau West Area Response Manager, says officers roused the man; however, he refused to open the car door and drove off.

“The unit pursued the vehicle at low speed before they were able to box him in about 500 metres up the road.

Family rescued from Kaweka Forest Park

A search and rescue operation in the Eastern District brought home a woman and her three children after they encountered difficulties while hiking over the weekend.

Around 5.45pm on Sunday, the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) received a notification from a satellite emergency notification device (SEND), similar to a personal locator beacon (PLB), from within Kaweka Forest Park.

RCCNZ coordinated an operation to find them, supported by Police Search and Rescue (SAR), and Land, Search and Rescue (LandSAR) Hawke’s Bay.
