Three kayakers are safely back on dry land after a chilly afternoon on the water ended with an unexpected rescue from the Police Eagle helicopter crew.

Police were first made aware of the trio capsizing at approximately 12.50pm off Maraetai Coast Road.

Eagle was quickly overhead and located the kayakers in the water.

Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a woman in Newlands this morning.

Emergency services were called to Gahagan Way at around 4am, where the woman was located deceased inside a property.

Police are currently speaking with a man, who is assisting with our enquiries. 

A scene guard is in place, and residents can expect to see an increased Police presence in the area as enquiries continue. 

There is not believed to be any risk to the public following this incident.
