Group lands in safe pair of hands following rescue

A group’s fishing trip ended in the cold and dark, but fortunately a rescue effort meant it wasn’t a tragedy.

Four people had set out to fish off the rocks at Piapia Bay in the Far North on Monday.

Detective Sergeant Paul Overton, Northland Police Search and Rescue lead, says after finishing their outing, the group headed back to the main road via an alternative route in the afternoon.

“Unfortunately, the group have got lost and stranded on a cliff edge near Wainui Bay; the sun had set, and darkness had set in.

Update 3: Search for Karori man

Extensive planning has been underway today in the search for missing Karori man Philip Sutton.

While Police did visit the scene this morning to assess stream conditions, the physical search activities that were expected to take place today were unable to go ahead due to safety concerns.

The search is now due to recommence on Wednesday, as the stream water levels drop and weather conditions improve.

Information sought after goats shot in Pōkeno

Counties Manukau

Police are appealing for information following a distressing incident at a Pōkeno property last week.

Investigations are continuing after 18 pet goats were shot dead on a property on Ridge Road overnight on Monday 13 April.

Counties Manukau South Area Investigations Manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Natalie Nelson, says the animals were inhumanly shot in a fenced paddock and the carcasses were all left on site.

“We are appealing to the public for any information in relation to this incident.

A trio of supermarket shoplifters were arrested in Takapuna yesterday, bagging an unrelated thief at the same time.

At around 4.50pm, Waitematā Police received a report of a group stealing from a Barrys Point Road supermarket.

Waitematā East Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant CJ Miles, says three men entered the supermarket and began a coordinated effort at taking items of interest.

“The alleged offenders were sighted filling their backpacks with alcohol and meat.

Name release: Fatal crash, Tennyson Street, Napier

Police can now name the woman who died after being struck by a bus in Tennyson Street, Napier on 17 April.

She was Olawande Perpetual Braimoh, aged 36.

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Police investigating reports of serious sexual offending by a Flaxmere man are continuing to appeal for information.

On Monday 23 March, a 37-year-old Flaxmere man, who has name suppression, was arrested and charged with abduction for sex, impedes breathing/blood circulation, two counts of unlawful sexual connection with female over 16, and four counts male rapes female over 16. He is currently remanded in custody, due to reappear in Napier District Court on 12 June.

Fleeing drivers fail to shake Police

A disregard for the road rules has ended in two arrests in Counties Manukau overnight.

The driver of a vehicle travelling with no headlights on and swerving across the road in now headed to court.

Just after 7pm, Police were alerted to a Honda HR-V travelling northbound on State Highway 2 without headlights activated and swerving within the lane.

A Pōkeno Highways unit has attempted to stop the vehicle however, the driver failed to stop and was not pursued.

Update: Search under way for Karori man

Police are in a position to name the Karori man who is unaccounted for following the severe weather in Wellington and urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.

Emergency services were contacted about 7.15am by a concerned resident who had not been able to make contact with a family member, Philip Sutton, who is in his 60s.

His Karori South Road residence was found to have been affected by floodwaters and debris.
