SteamOS 3.9.0 Preview

Note: This update is for the Steam Deck Preview channel, and includes new features that are still being tested. You can opt into this in Settings > System > System Update Channel.

Note on Preview Releases

This is an early Preview build of SteamOS 3.9, and may contain unexpected bugs or stability issues. If you encounter problems, please consider filing a bug on the SteamOS issue tracker.

The following notes are an overview, and may not include all changes since the previous SteamOS 3.8 Stable Release.

General

Misc

  • Updated the bootloader to improve compatibility with certain motherboards

  • The Desktop Mode lockscreen is no longer prevented from being explicitly enabled in settings (but remains off by default)

Developer

  • Switched WiFi backend to wpa_supplicant by default for new installations, improving compatibility with various WiFi networks

    • Enhanced wpa_supplicant to support fast WiFi reconnect on resume from sleep, previously only available in the iwd backend

    • Known issue: Existing installations will continue to use iwd unless manually enabled in Developer Settings

  • Linux kernel rebased on Linux 7.2

  • Added preliminary support for hibernation, not yet exposed in Game Mode UI

    • Enhanced Linux kernel hibernation support to enable interrupting hibernate requests and fixed various driver issues

  • Various scripts and packages have been renamed from `steamos-` to `holo-`, with aliases to the former names where appropriate

  • Improved support for running SteamOS as a VM guest with accelerated graphics (virtio-gpu, venus)

Two collisions, information sought, Patumāhoe

Auckland City

Tāmaki Makaurau Police continue to investigate after a serious incident involving two separate collisions and multiple cars near Pukekohe last night. 

About 6.40pm, Police were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on Patumāhoe Road, Patumāhoe. 

Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson, Counties Manukau CIB, says that following the crash, one of the drivers allegedly stole a vehicle belonging to a member of the public who had stopped to assist at the scene.

Fatal crash, Māngere

Location:
Counties Manukau

Police can confirm one person has died following a crash on State Highway 20, Māngere this afternoon.

The single vehicle crash, at the intersection of SH20 and SH20A, was reported to Police at around 12.10pm.

Sadly, the vehicle’s sole occupant died at the scene.

A northbound lane was blocked before the Walmsley Road over bridge following the crash, this has since reopened.

The Serious Crash Unit attended, and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Charges follow Mangawhai burglary

Police have laid charges following an aggravated burglary in Mangawhai on Monday afternoon.

“Our enquiries have been ongoing in recent days, have since charged a Mangawhai man over the offending, who is not known to the occupants at the address,” Acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie, Waitematā CIB, says 

The 26-year-old has been charged with aggravated burglary and assaults with intent to injure. The man remains in hospital.

“He has been remanded in custody, and the matter will be back in the North Shore District Court on 24 September.”

Man arrested following dangerous motorbike riding across Christchurch

Police have arrested and charged a 19-year-old man following an investigation into dangerous motorbike riding across Christchurch and surrounding areas.

The rider is alleged to have repeatedly engaged in dangerous driving behaviour, including travelling at speeds more than three times the posted speed limit on Christchurch’s Southern Motorway, performing wheelies, dangerous overtaking manoeuvres, and riding at excessive speeds on multiple occasions.

Good arrest in the west

Quick thinking cops have taken another prolific shoplifter off the beat after discovering more than $7000 worth of stolen property inside his vehicle.

Earlier this week, Waitematā West Police executed a search warrant at a Massey address after making enquiries into a string of burglaries in Whenuapai, Kumeū and Westgate in recent weeks.

Waitematā West Area Prevention Manager, Acting Inspector Nick Salter, says officers arrested and charged a 29-year-old man.

Have you seen Andreal?

Police are asking for the public’s help finding Andreal, who has been reported missing from the Manukau area.

The 13-year-old was last seen at about 10.30am on Wednesday 26 August in Goodwood Heights.

She is described as having straight black hair and is likely within the Counties Manukau area.

Police and Andreal’s family have concerns for her welfare and would like to find her as soon as possible.

Double homicide investigation launched, Wattle Downs

Police have launched a homicide investigation after two people were found dead at a Wattle Downs property this afternoon.

At about 1.45pm, emergency services responded to reports of a woman unresponsive at an address on Gambare Place.

Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Va’aelua, Counties Manukau CIB, says during a search of the property Police located a man who was also pronounced deceased.

“This is an awful set of events and no doubt unsettling for everyone involved and the wider community.

Police are responding to an unfolding serious incident in Wattle Downs this afternoon.

At about 1.45pm, emergency services responded to reports of a woman unresponsive at an address on Gambare Place.

Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

During a search of the property Police have located a man who was also pronounced deceased.

Cordons are in place at Mahia Road and schools in the immediate area were advised to lockdown.
